Also, you can KEEP adding points in them to make them more and more powerful, Then take them into freeplay. Nah, you can play freeplay without it, with regular colonies. Let's be honest, they intentionally designed this game so you can't do anything unless you do the main campaign.

I highly recomend you give the formicarium a go if you wish. I don't think you can truly enjoy this game just in free play mode like that. The formicarium campaign is the main game mode though.
